Preventive Dentistry in Dallas

There isn’t a single person who isn’t vulnerable to common dental problems such as gum disease or tooth decay. That’s why preventive dentistry is so important. The goal of preventive dentistry is to stop the most common dental problems before they start, or to nip the developing problems in the bud as quickly and efficiently as possible. At Dallas Esthetics, we’re committed to both thorough dental cleanings, oral exams, and more.

Our preventive services include:

Dental Check-Ups & Teeth Cleanings

Few things are as important to your oral health as routine dental cleanings and teeth cleanings. Daily brushing and flossing are important, but maintaining regular checkups helps in ways that brushing and flossing alone can’t. First, there are parts of your smile that are difficult to clean with just a toothbrush and floss. During your cleaning, one of our hygienists uses advanced instruments that most people do not have access to. Using these instruments, our hygienists thoroughly clean hard-to-reach areas.

Do you struggle with night time tooth grinding known as bruxism? For those who do, the trouble often stems from stress. Just because teeth grinding is a natural response to stress, that doesn’t mean it’s good for you. Habitual grinding can have a serious impact on your teeth and your smile, eventually exposing your teeth to future complications. It is common for patients with bruxism to also experience frequent headaches, earaches, and pain in the neck, back, and shoulders.

The good news is that relief from bruxism’s uncomfortable symptoms and damaging effects is possible with a special oral appliance known as a nightguard. Because your teeth are more vulnerable to grinding and clenching during sleep, that’s when you’ll wear the nightguard. As you rest, your custom-made appliance will help alleviate your condition improving your dental health and wellbeing in the process.

Would you like to learn more about treating bruxism with a nightguard? Contact our Dallas office with your questions or to schedule a consultation with one of our dentists.

While sportsguards are certainly important for anyone who plays a contact sport, the truth is any athlete will benefit from wearing one especially one that’s custom-made. Most sporting goods stores sell basic sportsguards, but these don’t provide the same level of protection that a custom-made sportsguard will.

Why are sportsguards so important? An estimated 13 to 39 percent of all dental injuries are related to athletic activity. Wearing a custom sportsguard drastically reduces risk of a serious dental injury and may reduce the severity of concussions.

If you’ve been playing without a sportsguard, don’t hesitate to contact our office. During a visit to our office, we take an impression of your mouth that our lab uses to create your personalized appliance. Call us today to begin the process.

Oral Cancer Screenings

While certain patients are at a higher risk of developing oral cancer because of behaviors like tobacco use and excessive alcohol consumption, at least 25 percent of oral cancer cases occur in patients with none of the usual risk factors. That’s why we offer oral cancer screenings for all patients. Through routine screenings, Dr. Higginbottom, Dr. Derksen, or Dr. Hildebrand monitor your oral tissues for any changes that might require additional attention.
