What is Dental IV Sedation?
We may recommend IV sedation for oral surgeries, complex or lengthy procedures, or when fear or anxiety makes it difficult to receive care. IV sedation helps calm the mind and body, relieving stress associated with the dental environment, including sounds, smells, and unfamiliar instruments.
It’s also a valuable option for patients who have a strong gag reflex, mobility or neuromuscular disorders, or who simply prefer a deeper level of relaxation. While sedation is managed by our outside anesthesia partners, our clinical team works closely alongside them to ensure your appointment is efficient, safe, and comfortable.
What to Expect
Before treatment, the anesthesiology provider will determine the appropriate level of sedation based on your medical history, current medications, and anxiety level. The sedative is administered intravenously, allowing precise control throughout your procedure.
Most patients feel deeply relaxed, drowsy, or may lightly sleep during care. Unlike general anesthesia, you remain conscious and able to respond to questions, yet unaware of the sights, sounds, and sensations of treatment.
Pre-Treatment Tips
Prior to your appointment, you’ll receive preparation instructions, which may include:
- Avoid eating or drinking for at least eight hours before treatment
- Continue prescribed medications unless advised otherwise
- Get a full night’s rest
During your visit, a board-certified anesthesiology team will monitor your breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure from start to finish, helping ensure a safe and smooth experience.
